SUMMARY:The Sip and Puff Adapted Mask Build-a-thon!
DESCRIPTION:Build a mask to help a person with a disability access their sip and puff devices while staying COVID safe! \n \nAbout this Event\n\nMakers Making Change‘s Atlanta Georgia Chapter and the Shepard Center are co-hosting a Sip and Puff Adapted Mask Build-a-thon! This event will occur simultaneously virtually and in person; Virtually (for the general public) and in-person event for the staff of the Shepherd Center.   Chapter Leader Kristen Webber will lead you through the process of building Aug 5 at 1pm EST\n\n \n\n\n\nWhere Will the Masks Made at the Event Go?\nMasks produced during this event will be supplied to inpatients and outpatients of the Shepherd Center. The Shepherd Center will also coordinate the COVID safe distribution of Sip and Puff masks created in the Atlanta\, Georgia area. For those producing masks in other areas in the United States and Canada hosts will review how to supply masks to sip and puff users in your area. \nHow Does the Virtual Event Work?\nFollowing registration\, participants are emailed the Zoom invitation for virtual participation 2 days before and the day of the event. Also included in the email there will be instructions for production\, and information regarding supplying masks to sip and puff users following production. A list of tools and materials is provided in the eventbrite registration link for your to purchase before the event. \nAbout Our Atlanta Georgia Chapter Leader:\nKristen works at the Shepherd Center as a dual spinal cord and brain injury specialist in Atlanta Georgia. She is currently an inpatient therapy manager within Shepherd’s spinal cord injury program. Kristen also works PRN in direct clinical practice at Emory Rehabilitation Hospital. Kristen received her BS and MS in Occupational Science and Technology; along with a graduate certificate in Assistive Technology and Accessible Design from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 2017\, she was awarded Board Certification in Physical Rehabilitation from the American Occupational Therapy Association. In 2018 she became licensed as an Assistive Technology Professional. Kristen has a passion for universal design in products as well as digital and physical environments. During her tenure as Membership Chair she assisted her committee in founding the GOTA YouTube Channel. As Communication Chair she helped to bring universal design principles to the GOTA web page\, YouTube Channel\, Newsletter\, and email blasts improving accessibility for those with visual\, auditory\, and physical impairments. \n\n\n\n\n\nMakers Making Change is a project that pairs makers with people with disabilities who need access to low cost assistive technologies. DESCRIPTION:Neil Squire and Makers Making Change are excited to partner with New Brunswick’s Premier’s Council on Disabilities for a virtual event where participants will build adaptive switches in celebration of International Day for Persons with Disabilities! The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is annually observed on 3 December to promote the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities and to take action for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society and development. \nParticipants will be provided with tools and materials\, and be instructed by MMC staff on how to build a Round Flexure Switch (additional information on this switch can be found in our projects library) virtually. Participants learn how to solder and assemble the assistive device which will then be donated to Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation and their Technology Access program. Bliss Carman Middle School’s Grade 6 science classes will be making Light Touch and Raindrop switches during their class as part of learning about technology. DESCRIPTION:The MMC team is thrilled to be partnering with our friends at Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation to build their newly developed Lift switches and Twitch switches. \nThe Lift Switch\nThe Lift Switch is for people who have movement ability\, but who no longer have the strength or endurance to hover their hand or foot or other body part over an accessible switch they already own. The Lift Switch has three modes that all allow for use of your accessible switch in reverse\, where lifting off of the switch activates it. The Lift Switch project is currently in the research phase. \nThe Twitch Switch\nThe Twitch Switch is designed for people who have very limited motion. It consists of a controller box with three wireless sensors. Up to three sensors can then be attached to any part of the body where any movement is possible. That movement will be picked up by the sensors\, allowing the user to navigate a computer or wireless device screen\, or operate switch adapted devices. The Twitch Switch project is currently in the research and quality improvement phase. DESCRIPTION:Join the NYC chapter of Makers Making Change and help us build the Enabled Controller Mini to add to our DIY AT lending library. This device functions as a switch interface for use between access switches and a computer or mobile device. They allow a person with a motor disability to use a customized button that plugs into the device in order to interact with their computer. \nMaterials\nAll the needed components\, 3D prints\, and soldering equipment will be provided. If you are able to 3D print your own case that would be most helpful but not necessary. STL files are available here. You will need to bring a laptop with Arduino software already installed. If possible\, additional installation of the MU code editor would be helpful. SUMMARY:Microbit Bluetooth Switch Build for iOS Control
DESCRIPTION:Assistive technology (AT) is any device or system that improves the quality and independence of a person with a disability. Unfortunately\, oftentimes the cost of these devices is prohibitive and the procurement process can be quite lengthy and frustrating. DIY (Do It Yourself) or DFO (Do For Others) AT has been a growing movement allowing more affordable access to these types of devices using common fabrication techniques and commercially available components. This global pandemic has brought to light the importance of access to the internet and other computer/ mobile device resources. \nThis workshop will be broken into two parts: \n\n30 minutes: An overview of the concepts\, including an example low-cost DIY AT device (<$25) and a demonstration of how it’s used to operate an iPad.\n1 hour (Optional): A walk-through of the building and setting up the example device. Details on parts and tools are provided below and we encourage participants to “build along” with us.  We’ll even provide part of the materials (for the cost of shipping & while supplies last)!\n\nTarget Audience:\nThis build is geared specifically for novice makers or individuals interested in providing an access method for a user with a physical disability. Target participants include family members\, caregivers\, disability professionals\, or AT users themselves. This project DOES NOT require any soldering or access to 3D printing and utilizes commonly available and commercially accessible materials. In addition\, the code used is beginner-friendly and block-based using the Makecode (new window) platform. \nPresenters:\nBill Siever\nBill is a Teaching Professor at Washington University in St. Louis\, where he teaches courses in Computer Science and Engineering. In addition\, Bill tries to develop materials that make technology more approachable for everyone. \nLoreto Dumitrescu\nLoreto is an occupational therapist and educational technologist. She has been working in the field of assistive technology for over a decade and helps run the NYC chapter of Makers Making Change (new window).

SUMMARY:North Forge Switch Build Event
DESCRIPTION:Makers Making Change are hosting a workshop in partnership with North Forge\, supported by Women in 3D Printing\, on May 12 2022  @ 1.00pm-4.00pm (CST) \n(this is a private event and by invitation only ) \nJoin us to learn about Assistive Technology and the work of the Neil Squire Society and the Makers Making Change program.  Learn some of the basics of 3D printing using slicr software\, how to design a switch topper and build your own MMC60 Flexure switch. \nThis switch is activated by applying pressure on the top surface. This switch can be connected to any standard AT interface\, and can be used to operate switch adapted toys and with the Xbox Adaptive Controller. The switch can be used on a flat surface or mounted using the 1/4″-20 UNC connection on the bottom. \nThe top button / activation surface is attached to the base by threading it on. This makes it easy to change tops to change color\, labels\, etc. \nFull build kits\, tools and step by step instructions will be supplied to participating Students will be joined by North Forge mentors to help with the switch build. \nMakers Making Change is pleased to have you join us to provide assistive devices to people with disabilities in your community!
