SAP staff will work together to assemble some of our access switches and re-configure store bought children’s toys so that they can be connected with the switches. The objective is to give children with disabilities a chance to play with toys and learn about cause-and-effect. \nFor more information about this event or to learn more about how to organize a similar event for your organization\, please contact info@makersmakingchange.com

SUMMARY:Virtual Holiday Hack Along – Adapt A Toy
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US AT OUR VIRTUAL HOLIDAY HACK ALONG AND HELP US TO PROVIDE MORE AFFORDABLE  ADAPTED TOYS  TO CHILDREN IN YOUR COMMUNITY\nMany electronic toys have a switch that activates its function. For children\, while being fun\, it helps teach cause and effect. Motor development\, cognitive development\, language and social interaction skills can also be promoted. Over the longer term these skills are applied to more sophisticated devices and equipment. This greatly enhances a person’s quality of life. \nFor children with disabilities\, pushing the toy’s default button may not be possible\, but they may be able to activate other switches. Switch adapting a battery operated toy enables alternate switches to be plugged in to operate the toy. This may be the only way a child can operate the toy. When a child with a disability first uses a switch toy\, it is often be the first time she/he has independently controlled anything! Regular interaction with toys and sensory devices can be of significant benefit to a child’s development. \n  \nFor The Virtual Holiday Hack Event You Will Need:\n\nA Star Gazer Toy  (you will need to buy-here’s a link via Amazon)\n3 female 3.5mm mono audio jacks\n3 mono 3\,5 mm audio cables (similar to this)\n5/32′ drill\nwire strippers\npliers\nsmall Phillips and Robertson screwdriver\na soldering iron stand\, solder and sponge( as well as copper braid or a de-soldering pump)\nflush cutters\npermanent marker\nmasking tape (optional)\na switch (your own\, or check out our open source assistive device library for designs)\nSafety glasses\n\nSpaces are limited: To register or for more info contact Suzanne Winterflood\, Regional Coordinator\, Winnipeg at suzannewin@neilsquire.ca

SUMMARY:Hacking for the Holidays NYC Chapter: 2nd Annual Adapted Toy Hackathon
DESCRIPTION:The holidays are here! Join the NYC metro chapter of Makers Making Change in collaboration with Makerspace NYC and Second Chance Toys for its second annual toy adaptation hackathon. Our goal is to adapt the gently donated toys supplied by Second Chance Toys for switch access and get them out in time for the holiday. In addition\, we will be building some simple 3D-printed switches to accompany the adapted toys. \nWe will be setting up shop at the Brooklyn Makerspace NYC location along with the needed equipment to adapt. This is a free event and any skill level is welcome from the expert electrical engineer to the curious parent. We will be soldering\, therefore\, young children may not attend. Adapted toys may be taken home free of charge. \nHave a toy you’d like to adapt? Consider bringing it to the hackathon and get some help! When selecting a toy to hack\, consider toys that activate using buttons. Toys that require voice control\, motion\, or other more complex activation methods may be more challenging to adapt. Take a look at Makers Making Change’s “How to Switch Adapt Toys” page for an overview and additional guidance.
