SUMMARY:Maker Faire Bay Area
DESCRIPTION:Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly festival of invention\, creativity and resourcefulness\, and a celebration of the Maker movement. \nPart science fair\, part county fair\, and part something entirely new\, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts\, crafters\, educators\, tinkerers\, hobbyists\, engineers\, science clubs\, authors\, artists\, students\, and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned. \nThe launch of Maker Faire in the Bay Area in 2006 demonstrated the popularity of making and interest among legions of aspiring makers to participate in hands-on activities and learn new skills at the event. 200\,000 people annually attend the two flagship Maker Faires in the Bay Area and New York\, with an average of 44% of attendees first timers at the Bay Area event\, and 61% in New York. A family-friendly event\, 50% attend the event with children. In 2017\, over 190 independently-produced “Mini Maker Faires” plus over 30 larger-scale Featured Maker Faires will have taken place around the world\, including Tokyo\, Rome\, Shenzhen\, Taipei\, Seoul\, Paris\, Berlin\, Barcelona\, Detroit\, San Diego\, Milwaukee\, and Kansas City. \nMaker Faire is primarily designed to be forward-looking\, showcasing makers who are exploring new forms and new technologies. But it’s not just for the novel in technical fields; Maker Faire features innovation and experimentation across the spectrum of science\, engineering\, art\, performance and craft. \nMaker Faire is a gathering of fascinating\, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. It’s a venue for makers to show examples of their work and interact with others about it. Many makers say they have no other place to share what they do. DIY (Do-It-Yourself) is often invisible in our communities\, taking place in shops\, garages and on kitchen tables. It’s typically out of the spotlight of traditional art or science or craft events. Maker Faire makes visible these projects and ideas that we don’t encounter every day. \nMaker Faire is brought to you by Maker Media.  Maker Media publishes Make: magazine\, produces Maker Faire\, and offers DIY electronics\, tools\, kits\, and books through its online and pop-up Maker Shed stores.

SUMMARY:CAOT Conference Workshop: Introduction to Maker Skills for Occupational Therapists
DESCRIPTION:Introduction: Makers Making Change(MMC) connects makers to people with disabilities to create\naffordable open source assistive technologies. Objectives: Participants will learn “maker skills” to\nexpand their practice; they will learn to solder\, create a simple switch circuit\, as well 3d modelling can\nbe used to create customized AT solutions. Participants will also learn how our online network can\nsupport OT’s and their clients to access low cost community built Assistive Devices through engaging\nmaker volunteers in their community. Approach: After an initial session introduction\, participants move\nfreely between activities where they can spend as much or as little time as they would like to try out the\nskills of their choice. Practice Implications: OT’s will engage with maker culture to learn to new skills like\nsoldering and creating a simple switch circuit. Occupational Therapists will learn about MMC’s Open\nSource Assistive Device Library and will learn how MMC’s website can support clients by connecting\nthem to the community of volunteer makers offering their time to 3D print devices created for people in\ntheir community; this person to person model reduces cost of assistive devices significantly. OT’s can\nalso sign up on the MMC site to gain access to professional development workshops to build on their\nprofessional knowledge base to provide more possible solutions to their clients access issues.\nConclusion: Engaging with the tools and technology of maker culture gives Disability Professionals a\nbroader skillbase to draw on in order to better serve and connect their clients to devices\, technology\nand services. Connecting OT’s and people with disabilities through Makers Making Change’s\nMatchMaking service builds community\, creates access to low cost 3d printed assistive devices and\nprovides Disability Professionals support in expanding their network\, personal practice\, knowledge and\nskills. \nRegistration required (limited space)

SUMMARY:LipSync Buildathon: NYC Resistor
DESCRIPTION:The LipSync enables a person that has no use of their hands to use a touchscreen device\, laptop or computer — it is a mouth operated joystick that allows a person to control an onscreen cursor with minimal head and neck movement. SUMMARY:LipSync Buildathon: NY Designs
DESCRIPTION:The LipSync enables a person that has no use of their hands to use a touchscreen device\, laptop or computer — it is a mouth operated joystick that allows a person to control an onscreen cursor with minimal head and neck movement. An open-source hardware project funded by Google\, it uses 3D printed parts\, an Arduino Micro board\, and other common parts that can be soldered to a circuit board and built in a day. \nA LipSync Buildathon is an event that train’s makers to build an open source assistive technology\, the LipSync. By the end of the session\, each maker will make a LipSync for a person in their community. \nTeams will be supplied with the tools\, components\, parts and instructions\, and will work together to assemble\, solder\, 3D print components\, transfer the code onto an Arduino board\, and mount the device to a wheelchair. They will be supported by the LipSync creators\, the Neil Squire Society\, and their new program\, Makers Making Change: connecting makers to people with disabilities to create open-source assistive technologies. \nFor more information about the event or to apply to receive a LipSync please contact: Chad Leaman\, chadl@neilsquire.ca
