DESCRIPTION:The Makers Making Change team will be on the judging panel at the Simon Cox Student Competition. \n2026 Simon Cox Student Design Competition top ideas will be showcased at the Simon Cox Student Design Competition on April 25\, 2026 at ICORD Centre\, Vancouver. \nThe Simon Cox Student Design Competition begins with an idea for a new piece of assistive technology. Whether that idea comes from a student team or a person living with a physical disability (peer)\, the goal is to turn a real-world challenge into a practical solution. When a student team chooses to take on a project\, the Peer Program will work to facilitate a connection between the student team and a peer\, forming a collaborative partnership. Together\, they work throughout the competition to advance the concept as far as possible within the allotted timeframe. Some teams deliver highly refined\, functional products\, while others develop strong prototypes that demonstrate proof of concept and future potential. Each project represents meaningful progress\, even when the outcome is not a fully finished device. \nThe competition culminates in showcasing these creative and assistive technology design solutions that facilitate greater independence in the home for people with physical disabilities. The judges are looking for innovations that can create positive\, practical solutions to overcome barriers in the home. They will also evaluate the craftsmanship of the working models and the quality of the presentation in order to establish the most successful entries. \nPast winners have continued on to become leaders in the field of assistive technology. Teams explain their project ideas with a video or a live presentation on the final day of this year’s competition\, for a chance to win the prize money awarded for top presenters.

SUMMARY:MMC NYC Metro Chapter: 3D Designing Custom Keyguards for AAC Access
DESCRIPTION:Join Gemma White and Ken Hackbarth for a virtual workshop where participants will learn how design their own highly customizable keyguard files using the Volksswitch Keyguard Customizer system. The generated files can then be 3D printed or lasercut; offering a low cost and highly accessible option for AAC users and their caregivers. \nKeyguards are physical overlays placed on top of keyboards or communication devices to help individuals with motor control difficulties accurately select keys by preventing accidental key presses. They support access to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) by providing a stable\, guided surface that enhances precision\, thereby enabling users to communicate more effectively. An AAC app is a software application designed to assist people with speech or language impairments by providing alternative methods of communication\, such as symbols\, text-to-speech\, or voice output\, allowing users to express their needs\, thoughts\, and feelings. \nGemma White is an SLP with over 20 years of experience working with AAC. She graduated from the University College London as a Speech Therapist in 2000. Gemma has served on the AAC SIG12: PDC and a member of RCSLT UK. Gemma developed applications and shared her clinical expertise presenting for Apple\, and numerous CE courses for SLP’s\, AT professionals\, including for multidisciplinary at ATIA and ASHA. She is currently the Clinical Coordinator at WIHD Assistive Technology Program and Speech Department\, NY. \nKen Hackbarth is the president and founder of Volksswitch.org (now Volksswitch LLC)\, an organization devoted to democratizing assistive technology by leveraging the power and promise of 3D printing. Prior to his current position\, he worked for almost three decades as a systems architect for AT&T Bell Laboratories and its subsequent divestitures. He has a Master of Science in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Arizona\, a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona\, and a Master of Education in Special Education\, with a concentration in assistive technology\, from Bowling Green State University. \nNYC Metro Makers Making Change \nMakers Making Change aims to lower the barriers to assistive technology by connecting makers with assistive technology users and disability professionals to fabricate custom or available open designs. The New York City Metro Chapter is a group of volunteers supporting this mission through fabrication of devices and educational workshops. \nMaterials \nWe encourage you to follow along during this workshop. Paulo is an avid cyclist and motorcyclist but after hitting a parked car\, he was paralyzed from the chest down. Since his accident five years ago\, he spends time in the gym\, training for athletics\, working on building his future and spoiling his dogs. “Everything is so temporary\, so make the most of today.” \nMarjorie Aunos\n \nMarjorie Aunos\, Ph.D. is a researcher\, speaker\, and consultant on accessibility and inclusion. She teaches organizations and educators to solution-find and build environments that are accessible\, inclusive\, and welcoming to young families with disabilities. Her TEDx talk “What we can learn from disabled parents” was viewed over 50\,000 times in the first week.

DESCRIPTION:National AccessAbility Week (NAAW) 2025 takes place from May 25th to May 31st. It’s a time to promote accessibility and inclusion across Canada. This week recognizes the important contributions of people with disabilities and encourages efforts to remove barriers\, creating a fair and welcoming society for everyone. Get involved and help support greater accessibility! \nCommunities\, schools\, and workplaces across Canada can all take part in three different ways: \nVirtual Presentation\nWatch a virtual presentation featuring inspiring speakers with disabilities who will share their personal stories\, achievements\, and challenges. \nBuildathon\nReceive funding and organize a build event where youth and community members will learn how to make assistive technology solutions. \nWalk and Roll Event\nJoin or organize a neighborhood walk to show support and allyship for people with disabilities in their communities. \nSign up for some or all of these activities here.

DESCRIPTION:Every Tuesday this month\, ConnecTra is featuring a different Abilities Expo vendor. Join Neil Squire Society on May 6 from 12-1pm to learn about accessible technology! \nThis organization has been revolutionizing the lives of Canadians with disabilities since 1984 through accessible assistive technology. Their work enables people with disabilities to achieve their goals\, reach their full potential and continue living life to the fullest. We have experience working with people who have disabilities\, injuries\, and illnesses. On top of assistive technology\, their focus is on innovation\, digital literacy\, and employment. \nThis presentation will be given by William\, Sandra\, and Laura\, members of the Neil Squire Society. William is a Case Manager at Neil Squire. With a background in rehabilitation and disability management\, he is dedicated to supporting individuals in gaining physical\, mental\, and financial independence. He is passionate about disability inclusion and equal opportunities for all. \nSandra is a Career Facilitator at Neil Squire. With a background in healthcare and community outreach\, her focus is on supporting individuals with disabilities and empowering underserved communities through employment\, return-to-work action plans\, and personalized assistance. \nLaura is a Case Manager with Empower3D\, a program that supports youth with disabilities in building personal\, professional\, and employment skills. With a background as an Outreach Worker in Adult Education and extensive experience in Career Services supporting immigrant and refugee communities\, Laura brings a holistic and inclusive lens to her work. She is deeply committed to helping young people move forward in their career journeys and supports growth by connecting individuals to resources and nurturing their belief in themselves. \nThis session will be closed 10 minutes after the start time to prevent disruption.
