SUMMARY:CAOT Conference Workshop: Introduction to Maker Skills for Occupational Therapists
DESCRIPTION:Introduction: Makers Making Change(MMC) connects makers to people with disabilities to create\naffordable open source assistive technologies. Objectives: Participants will learn “maker skills” to\nexpand their practice; they will learn to solder\, create a simple switch circuit\, as well 3d modelling can\nbe used to create customized AT solutions. Participants will also learn how our online network can\nsupport OT’s and their clients to access low cost community built Assistive Devices through engaging\nmaker volunteers in their community. Approach: After an initial session introduction\, participants move\nfreely between activities where they can spend as much or as little time as they would like to try out the\nskills of their choice. Practice Implications: OT’s will engage with maker culture to learn to new skills like\nsoldering and creating a simple switch circuit. Occupational Therapists will learn about MMC’s Open\nSource Assistive Device Library and will learn how MMC’s website can support clients by connecting\nthem to the community of volunteer makers offering their time to 3D print devices created for people in\ntheir community; this person to person model reduces cost of assistive devices significantly. OT’s can\nalso sign up on the MMC site to gain access to professional development workshops to build on their\nprofessional knowledge base to provide more possible solutions to their clients access issues.\nConclusion: Engaging with the tools and technology of maker culture gives Disability Professionals a\nbroader skillbase to draw on in order to better serve and connect their clients to devices\, technology\nand services. Connecting OT’s and people with disabilities through Makers Making Change’s\nMatchMaking service builds community\, creates access to low cost 3d printed assistive devices and\nprovides Disability Professionals support in expanding their network\, personal practice\, knowledge and\nskills. \nRegistration required (limited space)

SUMMARY:Hiring Fair Preparation Workshop: Acing the Interview
DESCRIPTION:Many people worry about what questions they will be asked in an interview\, but it is nearly impossible to know for sure. But when you know how to handle the types of questions\, you can respond effectively to anything they ask. In addition to the most commonly asked questions\, we will also go over the “toughest” questions\, and you may find that they aren’t so tough at all.  We will also learn what questions are inappropriate\, and how to respond to them. Participants will have the opportunity to practice and receive coaching in a safe and supportive environment.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Maker Skills for Occupational Therapists Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Makers Making Change connects makers to people with disabilities to create affordable open source assistive technologies. Participants will learn “maker skills” to expand their practice; they may learn to solder\, create a simple switch circuit\, as well learn 3D modelling which can be used to create customized solutions. Occupational Therapists will learn about our Open Source Assistive Device Library and will learn how our website can support clients by connecting them to the community of volunteer makers offering their time to 3D print devices created for people in their community; this person to person model reduces cost of assistive devices significantly. Occupational Therapists can also sign up on the site to gain access to professional development workshops to build on their professional knowledge base to provide more possible solutions to their clients’ access issues. \nTo learn more about Makers Making Change visit: https://www.makersmakingchange.com/ (new window) \nRSVP: rosalie.wang@utoronto.ca (space is limited)

SUMMARY:Toy Hacking for the Holidays
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop attendees will learn and be able to: \n\nDescribe the components required for a switch to work\nList three areas on the body that an individual with a disability can use to access an ability switch\, without or with the appropriate mounting tools\nDescribe two or more characteristics on a toy (or another battery operated device) that allow for switch accessibility\nIndependently solder the toy or device and add a switch jack for accessibility for an individual with a disability\n\nWho should attend? \n\nOccupational\, physical\, speech-language pathologists\, music and recreational therapists\nParents\, relatives and family friends\nMakers and tinkerers\nChildren under 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult\nBeginners\, new to soldering and experts!\nThis is an introductory course for all learners\n\nPast Events \nWe have held toy tinkering events in the past\, Hacking for the Holidays was a great success and dozens of toys were switch adapted by people who were just learning the basics of soldering and hacking. \nVisit our Facebook Photo Album to see photos from former events\, https://www.facebook.com/DiyAbility/photos_stream \nWhat is Switch Accessibility? \nFor many kids with physical disabilities playing with off-the-shelf toys is not possible\, depending on their unique abilities a toy might not be accessible. \nHowever\, if a child can move their head\, feet\, arm\, mouth or any other part of their body it is possible to use a switch to play with the toy. \nAdding switch jacks to a toy will not affect the original quality of use\, the existing buttons will operate as normal and kids who use accessibility switches will now be able to operate the toy. \nLearn how to solder and hack! \nBring a simple toy (from online or toy store) and modify them for switch accessibility. We will discuss the skills you need to switch adapt toys and other devices in the future for personal use\, work and fun. \n\nLearn how to open and identify the components inside a toy or basic electronic device.\nUnderstand the wiring of a toy from battery to switches to the activation of the device.\nLearn to solder and add an accessibility switch jack to an off-the-shelf toy. And put the toy back together for normal use or with a switch.\n\n\n\n\nAbout DIYAbility:\n\nWe believe that people with and without disabilities can be empowered when using the correct technology. More importantly\, we want everyone to know they have the right to participate in the design & making of technology – having the opportunity to make your own ‘stuff’ can lead to increased quality of life\, maintaining independence\, perhaps a new career and staying curious about the world. Making also happens to be really fun! \nThe goal of DIYAbility is to create a community for people who believe that technology is world opening. The tools and software available today can let anyone implement and make their own devices and make almost anything else. DIYAbility is not just about assistive technology and all that orthopedic looking stuff – it is about acting on an idea whether it is for personal fun or assistance. \nRead more about us here\, http://www.diyability.org.

SUMMARY:Adaptive Switch Training Workshop with Microsoft
DESCRIPTION:In preparation for the BCTECH Summit’s Youth Innovation Day (new window)\, Microsoft Vancouver staff will learn how to build adaptative switches. Switches are used by people with disabilities that may not be able to access traditional input methods to access electronics. Think of a video game controller… how would you play\, if you were unable to hold a remote or press the buttons? \nAs part of this session\, each participant will solder components\, assemble mechanical parts\, build one of these simple switches\, and be able to test it on an adaptive video game\, adapted toy\, or other input device used by people with disabilities. They are then asked to help at the BCTECH Summit Youth Innovation Day on March 12\, when this event will be run at a much larger scale with over 150 youth coming to learn how to build these in an hour and a half.
