The current work culture depends on HR tech for survival as it not only provides a framework for remote professionals to build community\, but it also enables managers and HR to direct onsite and remote teams.

SUMMARY:Make Play Accessible: A Toy Adapting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us this holiday season in supporting the magic of play for children with primarily motor disabilities. During this workshop\, we will be modifying commercial toys to make them switch accessible. The primary goal is to provide an avenue for these children to engage in play and recreation independently. Switches are external devices that can be activated by various movements or touch\, such as pressing a button\, blowing into a tube\, or tapping with a foot. Adapting toys involves modifying their design to incorporate these external switches\, allowing children with limited mobility to control and interact with the toys more easily. \nSwitch-adapted toys can range from simple to complex\, depending on the child’s needs and preferences. The process of making toys switch-accessible not only opens up new possibilities for play but also contributes significantly to the child’s cognitive and motor skill development. By incorporating inclusivity in toy design\, we create opportunities for children of all abilities to experience the joy\, learning\, and social interaction that play brings. \nIn addition to adapting a toy\, participants will also fabricate a 3D printed switch to accompany the toy. The commercial options for these switches is often high and adds an additional barrier to access. All toys and switches created as part of the workshop may be kept by participants to gift to those in their lives or will be donated to local schools and organizations. \nWho is this class for? \nThe class is geared towards all levels of technical skill with extra support provided for those new to soldering. Makers\, health professionals\, caregivers\, and family members of children with disabilities are encouraged to attend. \n$10 is the minimum donation to cover the cost of a toy\, but suggested is $20. All additional funds will go to Makers Making Change local chapter to fund volunteers who cannot cover the base price\, but still want to participate\, and towards future initiatives.

DESCRIPTION:Neil Squire Central Region staff will be at the 11th Annual EARN Conference. \nWhile strides have been made in advancing disability inclusion during the hiring process\, the retention phase remains a significant challenge for many employers. Far too often\, individuals with disabilities face barriers that hinder their career progression\, such as a lack of attention to wellness\, accessibility\, and inclusion and belonging. As a result\, many talented and qualified employees with disabilities find themselves leaving a workplace – or even the workforce – prematurely\, leading to a loss of skills and experiences that could greatly benefit organizations. \nThe retention of people with disabilities in workplaces is a strategic necessity. It is an acknowledgment that diversity is not just about initial inclusion but about creating environments where every individual\, regardless of their abilities\, can thrive and contribute to the fullest. By retaining and empowering individuals with disabilities\, we not only enhance organizational performance and innovation but also foster a society that values every individual’s potential and contributions\, creating a more equitable and accessible future for all. \nAimed at employers\, along with service providers and other stakeholders\, this year’s Conference will focus on Retention of People with Disabilities. The Conference provides a unique platform to uncover the underlying factors that contribute to the challenge of retaining employees with disabilities. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the nuances of this issue\, examining the barriers and best practices that shape the retention landscape. \nWe are delighted that Michael Lifshitz of IllumAbilities will guide our program once again this year. DESCRIPTION:Over the course of three workshops\, Makers Making Change will be introducing our program to Grade 9 students at Linden Christian School. \nStudents will be introduced to Computer Aided Design (CAD) using Tinkercad. They will learn how they can design and make affordable assistive technology devices. \nStudents will also use Tinkercad to design 3d printed toppers for assistive switches. \nFinally\, students will assemble assistive switches using their customized switch toppers and will switch adapt toys to help illustrate one of many applications of assistive switches. Toys and switches will be donated to children with disabilities in the local community.
