SUMMARY:Disability Awareness Week 2021: Let's Talk Ability
DESCRIPTION:The Premier’s Council on Disabilities is proud to once again be organizing several province-wide events as part of Disability Awareness Week (DAW).  In addition\, we will be offering ongoing advertising support to provincial and local community groups for any events that they are hosting. \nDisability Awareness Week (DAW) continues the tradition of National Access Awareness Week first established in 1988 to promote better community access for people with disabilities. In 1998\, a decision was made in New Brunswick to continue celebrating an annual awareness week but with a new name to ensure that all issues related to persons with a disability could be promoted. The main goal of DAW is to raise public awareness of existing barriers that prevent citizens with disabilities from full and equal participation in all aspects of their community and what may be done to correct these problems. We also want to celebrate examples of best practices and advancements made towards full inclusion for citizens with disabilities. \nThe DAW awareness campaign targets the participation of communities large and small across New Brunswick to create positive changes in the lives of people with disabilities. \nActivities for Disability Awareness Week are coordinated at the provincial level by the Premier’s Council on Disabilities. Local groups will also organize community projects across the province. Disability Awareness Week covers all types of disabilities and all age groups in partnership with any interested supporters. \nDAW is not intended to provide an opportunity for organizations to raise funds for their own activities. The sole focus should be on public awareness about disability issues. \nPlease join us as we celebrate the 34th year of this campaign!

The dice spinner allows an individual to roll a dice in a creative way\, by plugging in an adaptive switch and pressing to have the spinner roll the dice! This allows for anyone to roll a dice with a press of a switch! Makers Making Change is an innovative community-based initiative that connects makers to people with disabilities to create affordable open source assistive technologies. Makers Making Change utilizes emerging technology such as Arduino microcontrollers\, 3D printing and laser cutting. The project integrates the culture and communities that surround the open source movement\, the maker movement and the crowdsourcing movement.

DESCRIPTION:Our Director of Innovation\, Chad Leaman\, will be speaking at the International Symposium on Rehabilitation Research 2021 about Open-Source Assistive Technology Devices – 3D printing and making access solutions. \nSummary:\nMakers Making Change connects people with disabilities and disability professionals to makers\, who can assist in fabricating assistive technologies from our open-source library of assistive technology (Open AT). There are over 100 devices\, designed both by our staff and by our community of volunteers. These devices document where to source parts\, provide downloadable 3d printable files\, code and assembly instructions. Anyone can build these devices\, but we work with students\, engineers and other maker volunteers to help build these solutions for people that need assistive technology in their community.  http://www.makersmakingchange.com \nWe have hosted over 100 buildathon events\, have 30 Chapters across North America\, and deployed thousands of assistive technologies to people with disabilities and disability organizations. We are focusing on building this model to foster social connection\, empathy\, codesign\, and partnerships that cross typical social-economic barriers\, providing customized solutions at a fraction of the cost of commercial offerings through action-based philanthropy. \nLearn how this program model provides new opportunities to meet the assistive technology needs of people with disabilities.
