SUMMARY:Rehab Equipment Expo Assistive Technology Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The Winter Expo in January 2017 was a success\, thanks to all of you who braved the prospect of icy roads to make it. The school Christmas break and Oval availability however\, have made it necessary for us to return to our traditional time of year for the next event. \nThe purpose of Rehab Equipment Expo is to give clinicians and consumers in the community and health facilities access to information needed to make educated decisions regarding the purchase of assistive technology. The event draws well over five hundred clinicians and almost one hundred exhibitors \nThroughout the day not only will you be able to visit the exhibit booths\, put names to faces and try out equipment; there will also be presentations from experts in their field designed to improve your knowledge about equipment selection and utilization. Information collected from the major funding sources in British Columbia has been collected and will be available to attendees. \nREE is an excellent opportunity to discover support groups providing services to people with a disability. Many therapists use the event to network and get back in touch with colleagues. \nIf that isn’t enough to convince you that REE2018 is a must; you are also treated to complimentary food throughout the day. \nPlease feel free to distribute this information amongst your colleagues in Nursing\, Occupational Therapy\, Physical Therapy\, Purchasing\, and Speech Language Pathology.

SUMMARY:Hiring Fair Preparation Workshop: Acing the Interview
DESCRIPTION:Many people worry about what questions they will be asked in an interview\, but it is nearly impossible to know for sure. But when you know how to handle the types of questions\, you can respond effectively to anything they ask. In addition to the most commonly asked questions\, we will also go over the “toughest” questions\, and you may find that they aren’t so tough at all.  We will also learn what questions are inappropriate\, and how to respond to them. Participants will have the opportunity to practice and receive coaching in a safe and supportive environment.

SUMMARY:Portland Mini Maker Faire
DESCRIPTION:September 15-16\, 2018\, 9:30am-5:30pm \nThe Portland Mini Maker Faire at OMSI showcases the amazing works of all kinds and ages of makers—anyone who is embracing the do-it-yourself (or do-it-together) spirit and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience. It is a community-based\, fun and engaging learning event that inspires everyone to become a maker and connect to people and projects in their local community. The sheer variety of the more than 100 exhibits\, most of them hands-on\, will boggle the mind. The Portland Mini Maker Faire will run the gamut from demonstrations of 3D printing and robot welding\, to knife forging\, bee keeping\, recycled skateboard jewelry\, and much more. \nMaker Faire originated in 2006 in the San Francisco Bay Area as a project of the editors of Make: magazine.  It has since grown into a significant worldwide network of both flagship and independently-produced events.  Read more on Maker Faire history\, the Maker Movement\, as well as how to start a Maker Faire or a School Maker Faire where you live.

By the end of the session\, each maker will make a LipSync for a person in their community. \nTeams will be supplied with the tools\, components\, parts and instructions\, and will work together to assemble\, solder\, 3D print components\, transfer the code onto an Arduino board\, and mount the device to a wheelchair. They will be supported by the LipSync creators\, the Neil Squire Society\, and their new program\, Makers Making Change: connecting makers to people with disabilities to create open-source assistive technologies. \nFor more information about the event or to apply to receive a LipSync please contact: Chad Leaman\, chadl@neilsquire.ca

SUMMARY:Introduction to Maker Skills for Occupational Therapists Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Makers Making Change connects makers to people with disabilities to create affordable open source assistive technologies. Participants will learn “maker skills” to expand their practice; they may learn to solder\, create a simple switch circuit\, as well learn 3D modelling which can be used to create customized solutions. Occupational Therapists will learn about our Open Source Assistive Device Library and will learn how our website can support clients by connecting them to the community of volunteer makers offering their time to 3D print devices created for people in their community; this person to person model reduces cost of assistive devices significantly. Occupational Therapists can also sign up on the site to gain access to professional development workshops to build on their professional knowledge base to provide more possible solutions to their clients’ access issues. \nTo learn more about Makers Making Change visit: https://www.makersmakingchange.com/ (new window) \nRSVP: rosalie.wang@utoronto.ca (space is limited)
