SUMMARY:Global Day of Giving: Giving Tuesday
DESCRIPTION:GivingTuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering\, taking place each year after Black Friday. The “Opening day of the giving season\,” it’s a time when charities\, companies and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes. In the same way that retailers take part in Black Friday\, the giving community comes together for GivingTuesday. \nGivingTuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities; it provides a platform for them to encourage the donation of time\, resources and talents to address local challenges. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners – nonprofits\, civic organizations\, businesses and corporations\, as well as families and individuals – to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness. Across Canada and around the world\, GivingTuesday unites communities by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another. \n“We have two days that are good for the economy. Now we have a day that is good for the community too.”

SUMMARY:International Day For Persons With Disabilities Virtual Switch Build
DESCRIPTION:Neil Squire and Makers Making Change are excited to partner with New Brunswick’s Premier’s Council on Disabilities for a virtual event where participants will build adaptive switches in celebration of International Day for Persons with Disabilities! The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is annually observed on 3 December to promote the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities and to take action for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society and development. \nParticipants will be provided with tools and materials\, and be instructed by MMC staff on how to build a Round Flexure Switch (additional information on this switch can be found in our projects library) virtually. Participants learn how to solder and assemble the assistive device which will then be donated to Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation and their Technology Access program. Makers Making Change would like to thank Open Sky Cooperative in Sackville New Brunswick for participating in this event. \nRegistration for participating in this build event is currently closed\, but if you or your organization is interested in participating in a build\, please get in touch at info@makersmakingchange.com (new window)!

SUMMARY:Let's Talk Accessibility First in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:In today’s digital age\, emerging technologies have brought services online\, and this has been amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. However\, not everyone benefits equally or experiences the online world and new technologies in the same way\, especially those with disabilities. As we become more digital\, how do we make sure that we’re fostering an accessibility-first mindset from the start\, when it comes to people with disabilities? \nAs part of International Day of Persons with Disabilities\, join top national and international experts to better understand what accessibility means in the digital age and how you can integrate an accessibility first mindset into your work. Learn why this is not a technological issue\, but rather a policy\, social\, economic\, legal\, cultural and human rights issue that all public servants need to understand. \nOur Director of Innovation\, Chad Leaman\, will be speaking at this event.

SUMMARY:Virtual Holiday Hack Along – Adapt A Toy
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US AT OUR VIRTUAL HOLIDAY HACK ALONG AND HELP US TO PROVIDE MORE AFFORDABLE  ADAPTED TOYS  TO CHILDREN IN YOUR COMMUNITY\nMany electronic toys have a switch that activates its function. For children\, while being fun\, it helps teach cause and effect. Motor development\, cognitive development\, language and social interaction skills can also be promoted. Over the longer term these skills are applied to more sophisticated devices and equipment. This greatly enhances a person’s quality of life. \nFor children with disabilities\, pushing the toy’s default button may not be possible\, but they may be able to activate other switches. Switch adapting a battery operated toy enables alternate switches to be plugged in to operate the toy. This may be the only way a child can operate the toy. When a child with a disability first uses a switch toy\, it is often be the first time she/he has independently controlled anything! Regular interaction with toys and sensory devices can be of significant benefit to a child’s development. \n  \nFor The Virtual Holiday Hack Event You Will Need:\n\nA Star Gazer Toy  (you will need to buy-here’s a link via Amazon)\n3 female 3.5mm mono audio jacks\n3 mono 3\,5 mm audio cables (similar to this)\n5/32′ drill\nwire strippers\npliers\nsmall Phillips and Robertson screwdriver\na soldering iron stand\, solder and sponge( as well as copper braid or a de-soldering pump)\nflush cutters\npermanent marker\nmasking tape (optional)\na switch (your own\, or check out our open source assistive device library for designs)\nSafety glasses\n\nSpaces are limited: To register or for more info contact Suzanne Winterflood\, Regional Coordinator\, Winnipeg at suzannewin@neilsquire.ca

SUMMARY:Join The Make Therapeutic Exercise Fun "Show and Tell"
DESCRIPTION:On December 19th 2020\, disability professionals of all types participated in a sponsored workshop focused on making therapeutic exercise fun using the Makey Makey. Participants in the workshop were asked to bring a specific idea or project they want to explore using the Makey Makey device. \nDuring this Show and Tell you will see the fun therapeutic projects they have invented for their clients and learn more about upcoming courses! \nWhat Did We Learn?\n\nHow to create a low tech switch out of cardboard\, tinfoil and bubble wrap and adjust pressure sensitivity\nHow to use the Makey Makey to output sounds\, control videos\, games and more!\nWhere to find simple online games that are easy and fun to use with a switch that involve no coding.\nHow to use the Makey Makey for virtual therapy sessions\nHow to use the program Scratch (new window) to code simple actions (ex: on switch press make X sound)\n\nWhat is a Makey Makey?\n\nThe Makey Makey (new window) device looks like an old school Nintendo Controller; it is a electronic invention device that works by opening and closing a circuit. Just attach any conductive object to the Makey Makey board with alligator clips and connect to the internet. This allows anything conductive to be a switch and trigger actions on another device! For example\, through simple movements with your body\, you can trigger sounds (new window)\, or an action on a software program (see the awesome video below!) Disability professionals can use the Makey Makey to motivate and engage their clients to participate in fun therapeutic exercises. The device can be used to help clients adopt switch use\, and practice their fine motor control\, strength and balance activities and more!\n \nJoin The Make Therapeutic Exercise Fun “Show and Tell”\nJan 26\, 2pm PST or 5 pm EST\, disability professionals who participated in the course will demonstrate the projects they created for their clients! Sign up Here (new window)\nTo check out some of the other Makey Makey course submisssions\, ideas and discussions go to our forum (new window) \nInterested to Join the Makey Makey for Therapeutic Exercise Course in the Future?\nJoin the waitlist here (new window) and we will alert you when the next workshop is scheduled!
