DESCRIPTION:Description\nIn recognition of October being Disability Employment Awareness Month – DEAM\, we invite you for breakfast on October 7th as we discuss the Economics of Inclusion. \nJoin us for EmployABILITY Business Breakfast with special guest Mark Wafer! \nMark Wafer is a disability rights activist. Until recently he was the owner of six highly successful Tim Hortons locations in Toronto. During his 25 years in the business Mark employed over 200 workers with disabilities in all areas of the operation including senior management. At any given time approximately 17% of his workforce identified as having a disability. \nMark is an internationally recognized expert on the economics of inclusion. He is an advisor to governments around the world and is responsible for Canada’s national disability employment strategy. \nMark has received many awards and recognition for his work most notably from her majesty\, Queen Elizabeth II. He was inducted into the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame in 2014 \nMark is also a Motorsports enthusiast\, former race car driver and 2008 Canadian historic sports car champion.

SUMMARY:Innovation Challenge Accessibility and Assistive Technology Hackathon
DESCRIPTION:Do you have an idea to enhance our human capabilities? Join Makers Making Change at the Crofton School’s All Girl Youth Hackathon on Sept 28\, 2019! The event will take place between 9AM and 5:30PM and is built on a curriculum of design thinking\, critical problem solving and applied creativity. There is no coding or programming required. This is open to all Senior School students (Grade 8 -12) from York House School\, Little Flower Academy and Crofton House School. Competitors will work in teams (up to 5) and present their ideas live on stage at the end of the day. Students will prototype an assistive technology solution that addresses a limitation people are having in their day-to-day lives. Participants have access to a workspace that includes hand tools\, 3D printer\, a laser cutter\, basic stock materials (e.g. adhesives\, fasteners) and of course their laptop. \nAttendees will have access to industry mentors\, prospective clients and workshops. Prizes include VR escape room experiences and an invitation to pitch your idea at an official industry pitch night.

Makers are tech enthusiasts\, metal artists\, homesteaders\, painters\, potters\, 3D printing enthusiasts\, knitters\, roboticists\, -anyone embracing the Do-It-Yourself (or Do-It-Together!) ethos. The maker community is expanding\, diverse\, and inclusive. \nMaker Faire Vancouver welcomes a broad range of ideas and projects\, and our past Makers have showcased (among other things) large tapestries\, metal sculptures\, cosplay costumes\, robotic dogs\, paintings\, human-powered vehicles\, jewelry\, 3D printing projects\, blown glass and lampwork\, and textile art pieces. (10:00 to 10:30am)\nJill Longhurst (PT) and Kevin Waldorf (OT) are the Regional Educators for Physio and Occupational Therapy for Vancouver Coastal Health. Part of the Professional Practice team\, they provide support to clinicians and students\, and are involved with regional education initiatives. \nIn this presentation\, they will provide a review of the new provincial Medical Equipment Provision Program (MEPP)\, including participating vendors (the Canadian Red Cross as primary vendor and seven additional vendors across the province) how to refer clients\, and answers to frequently asked questions. \nWEIGHT BIAS AND IMPACT ON HEALTH EQUITY (Noon to 1:00pm)\nDr. Mary Forhan is the Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy and associate professor\, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine\, University of Alberta. Dr. Forhan leads a program of research focused on reducing the disability experienced by persons living with obesity by addressing factors in the built and social environment and addressing issues associated with body functions and structures and activity limitations. \nThis session will provide strategies to provide quality care that considers bariatric care needs of clients living with obesity. \nPOWER ASSIST FOR MANUAL CHAIRS (2:30pm to 3:00pm)\nDr. Jaimie Borisoff is the Canada Research Chair in Rehabilitation Engineering Design at the BC Institute of Technology.
