DESCRIPTION:Makers Making Change are supporting the BCI UofC/Childrens Hospital booth at Beakerhead in providing switch adapted water guns (new window). They will use these to fill with paint and use the BCI tech to shoot the water guns at volunteers in white lab coats. This aims to educate folks on BCI tech along with switch adapted toys. \nMore info on Beakerhead: \nBeakerhead was founded in 2013 with the belief that making science and engineering accessible through art and entertainment would lead to unprecedented human ingenuity… and it sure has! \nOver the last nine years\, Beakerhead has facilitated 542\,000 in-person encounters with science\, technology\, engineering\, and math\, through art and entertainment. This magic has been made with 665 local partners\, 35\,000 volunteer hours\, and 1\,442 collaborating presenters. And we’ve reached over 605 million people online. That’s a lot of numbers. But they all add up to awesome.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Affordable Assistive Technology
DESCRIPTION:Join Makers Making Change (MMC) to make accessible\, affordable toys for children to have for their holiday gifts this year! \nMakers Making Change is a program of the Neil Squire Society\, a Canadian non-profit that uses technology\, knowledge\, and passion to empower Canadians with disabilities. At MMC\, we design affordable\, open-source assistive technology to meet a variety of end-user needs. In this hands-on session we will build an assistive switch and switch adapt an off-the-shelf toy. Switches and toys will be donated to people with disabilities in the community. \nIn partnership with the Dis/Usability speaker series\, the STREET Lab\, and the KMDI Lab we’ll learn how to make adaptive toys that are affordable\, and all of the toys made will be donated to kids who need them for their holiday presents. Learn how to solder\, put together 3D printed pieces\, and make a difference in someone’s life!
