SUMMARY:Hacking for the Holidays: National Holiday Wrap Up Week Fredericton
DESCRIPTION:Join Neil Squire’s Makers Making Change with support from New Brunswick’s Premier’s Council on Disabilities at this exciting event where volunteers will adapt toys for children with disabilities! \nIn celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities\, this event is part of Makers Making Change’s Hacking for the Holidays campaign which runs every fall season to provide switch adapted toys to families for the Holiday season by engaging volunteers — students\, corporate partners\, and other community members — in events across 10 provinces to help us adapt and donate 2\,000 toys and switches to families and clinicians all over Canada. \nVolunteers will be provided with instructions\, tools and materials to adapt a toy for switch access. Never done anything like this before? Don’t worry\, no prior experience working with tools or electronics is required — we’ll walk you through every step. Everyone is welcome. \nWhy is this so important? Every child deserves to play. But for many kids with disabilities\, toys can be hard to use independently\, and commercially adapted versions can run upwards of $300. However\, with a little bit of tinkering\, we can switch-adapt toys and make them accessible for a fraction of the cost.

SUMMARY:Toy Adapting with New Brunswick Volunteers & Premier's Council on Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to once again be partnering with New Brunswick’s Premier’s Council on Disabilities to host this great event. Makers Making Change will lead volunteers through adapting toys to make them more accessible for Makers Making Change’s Hacking for the Holidays campaign\, with toys being donated to children and families across New Brunswick and to the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation. \nVolunteers will be provided with the toy\, tools and instructions at the event. \nNew this year\, we are also introducing a gift wrapping station! While there will be the option to have your gift wrapped in the traditional or usual way\, we will also be demonstrating accessible gift wrapping. This option allows for gifts to be wrapped with a string or ribbon attached\, so it can be easily pulled. This helps to tear the gift paper for those with limited dexterity or hand movements\, making the process of unwrapping gifts easier. \nIf you are having trouble registering\, please reach out to: Courtneyc@neilsquire.ca or 902-240-1538 \nAnyone looking for a switch adapted toy donation\, please register and fill out this form: https://forms.gle/4JcepLjTcyLheC1B9 \nor email: Courtneyc@neilsquire.ca
