Betty Inspires Grassroots Fundraising Effort

May 11, 2011

The Scotiabank (new window) branch at Robson and Bute in Vancouver, BC have generously donated over $1,100 to the Neil Squire Society in memory of former client Betty A. Spinks.

Scotiabank Customer Support Reresentative Marta Saramin presents the donation to Suzanne Cross Manager of Development and Communications for the Neil Squire SocietyBetty, who suffered from a painful and deteriorating illness, found herself in a motorized wheelchair and not able to move her legs, arms or neck. This did not stop her from pursuing her dream of becoming a writer. She received a computer fitted with Dragon Naturally Speaking (new window) from the Society’s Computer Refurbishing program and soon she was able to write by using a microphone instead of a keyboard.

Betty successfully completed several courses at Simon Fraser University (new window) in Vancouver and had begun writing a book. In January she submitted the first 4 chapters of her book to several publishers and received some interest. By pushing herself to write 350 words each day to keep her motivation up, Betty was able to complete 11 of an intended 16 chapters before recently passing away.

The staff at the Scotiabank (new window) branch at Robson and Bute was so inspired by Betty’s spirit of perseverance that they organized several bake sales and ‘wear jeans to work days’ in order to raise the money. With the money they raised their hope is that the Neil Squire Society will be able to help another “Betty” fulfill their dreams.

Thank you to everyone at the Scotiabank (new window) Robson and Bute branch for your wonderful generosity and thank you Betty, for inspiring others with your perseverance and spirit!
