Do you remember when you finished high school (new window) and all you could think was, what am I going to do with my life? Well, Canada (new window) offers an exciting volunteer program called Katimavik (new window); allowing youth to explore and prepare for the professional world. It offers young people the chance to make a difference in Canadian communities (new window) and for themselves.
The Neil Squire Society (new window) is fortunate to be part of the Katimavik program and has many youth from all over Canada offering their time and skills. On February 9th, 2012, the Neil Squire Society participated in Burnaby’s (new window) Local Katimavik Committee meeting with other organizations such as GoBaci (new window), ReStores – Habitat for Humanity (new window), and Forestethics (new window). The goal of the committee is to foster relationships, and make sure the volunteer and the organization are both productive and happy.
Each organization has one to two Katimavik volunteers working at their office. The goal is to teach the volunteers things that will prepare them when entering the professional world. At the Neil Squire Society, the aim is to allow the volunteer to explore the tools and equipment that are available, as well as have a hands-on experience with the programs.
The Neil Squire Society hopes to inspire and teach every Katimavik volunteer. The dedication, curiosity, and talent from the youth who join Katimavik is greatly appreciated at the Neil Squire Society and being part of the Local Katimavik Committee is very valuable.
