Computer adaptation to stop the pain

July 31, 2013

Gordon participated in our Solutions Program in 2012. He was amazed by the equipment and care he received and wanted to share his story:

“Hi my name is Gordon. I live in the Port Alberni. (new window) I am a 57 year old male who mainly lives own his own.

To get my business off the ground I made an application to EATI (new window) to get some funding in order to get a proper set up, and a proper computer system.Assistive Technology

I was always in a lot of pain when I was on the computer. I did not have the right set up or the right equipment for my disability. Because of this, my pain level increased much more. I did not know what technology was out there or what would help me to start up my business. Wendy from EATImade the suggestion that I go over to the Neil Squire Society and have an assessment. I wanted to start up my own business helping others get what they need on income assistance.

I was born with many different disabilities and life can be hard but with my determination I have succeeded in managing my life. I have cerebral palsy (new window) which effects my hands and the way my brain works. I am a determined person who is very eager to get what I need no matter what barriers I face.

I was impressed by the knowledge that the Neil Squire Society had and also the experience they provided. I appreciated their concern and understanding of my needs.

I received a computer desk, computer equipment and a chair, as well as some software. With the new computer equipment I am no longer in pain; I am on the computer daily. My knowledge of the computer has increased tremendously; I have a lot more confidence doing computer-related activities.”
