Lessons in Assistive Technology

Charles Levasseur with the students from Eastern CollegeCharles Levasseur is a Certified Assistive Technology (new window) Specialist for the Neil Squire Society, Atlantic Region.  Earlier this month, Charles taught a class about Assistive Technology (new window) to students enrolled in the Occupational Therapist Assistant Program (new window) offered by Eastern College (new window) Moncton campus (new window).

The class was part of a learning unit entitled “Therapeutic Process II” that dealt with computers and Occupational Therapy (new window) designed to address the following learning objectives:

  • Outline administrative and clinical uses of computers in OT
  • List and identify the components of a computer system
  • List ways that computers can be modified to help clients use them
  • List basic procedures for the use of a computer with clients
  • Discuss precautions and guidelines for use of computers as an intervention tool
  • Demonstrate an ability to analyze the benefits of software used in OT
  • Discuss the role of environmental control systems and switches in OT

More specifically, these topics allow the students to have a better understanding on how Assistive Technology (new window) can assist the therapeutic process and help their clients achieve their goals as well as improve their ability in areas such as sensory motor, cognitive, psychosocial, self care, productivity, employment and leisure.
