“I’m called up to the till quite often to be a cashier, and most of the time I clearly hear customers while I’m on till, even though both of us are wearing masks and there’s plexiglass between us — that gives me confidence. When they call me for till, I don’t have any anxiety — ‘what happens if I don’t hear them?’ I don’t have that. That’s huge for me.”
“After just one month, they had a series of jobs for me to choose from, and I got hired with the Disability Foundation in September 2020,” Sheryl says of participating in the Working Together program.
George had been working in retail in Victoria and was looking forward to starting a second job, a work from home position as an accessibility tester for digital products. But he needed the right equipment to start his new job.
“It’s not as scary to open a computer anymore,” he laughs. “Because I would open up the computer and just start trying to go here, trying to go there, and I’d just get confused and lost. They were able to show me take step one, step two, step three — it made it a little easier for me to understand and to cope with.”
