Walk, Roll, and Raise Awareness

June 22, 2013

Rock and Roll Challenge 2013It’s May 30th, 2013. The temperature is pushing a sunny 30°C, and a parade of people with all physical abilities ‘walk’ and ‘roll’ their way down the streets of New Brunswick (new window). They have one goal in mind, to raise awareness of people with disabilities.

Approximately 23,000 people in 50 communities across New Brunswick took part in the Walk and Roll event. Coordinated by the Neil Squire Society’s Atlantic Region, the entire province of New Brunswick took part in this event during Disability Awareness Week (new window).

During this challenge, events were hosted province-wide to show support for persons with disabilities and to raise awareness of disability issues. It brings people together and is certainly a highlight for the year!

There was a special event sponsored by the Premier’s Council on the Status of Disabled Persons held at the Provincial Legislature in Fredericton, New Brunswick. This year, close to 750 people from all ages and backgrounds gathered in support of persons with disabilities. Premier David Alward (new window) was there, as were a number of his Cabinet Ministers and MLAs. They participated in the event, walking and rolling amongst the hundreds of school children, teachers, volunteers, family members, and friends who want to bring awareness to disability issues.
