In June, Julia opened up a small business in Nelson. She checks properties for clients, doing walkthroughs of their houses, inspecting appliances, plumbing, windows and doors.

Julia has fibromyalgia and complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

“It makes having a regular job difficult because of the chronic pain and chronic fatigue I experience. I can’t sit for prolonged periods without pain,” she shares.

An employment counselor referred her to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services. The results were far beyond what she hoped for.

“I started out asking for financial assistance to buy a computer chair and ended up with a whole office suite!” Julia explains. “I have a sit-to-stand desk with a great monitor and stand, foot stool, and the greatest ergonomic chair ever.”

It’s made a big difference in her life. For her small business, she does Zoom classes with Community Futures (new window), who helped her start the business, and it was something that used to be difficult for her.

“I no longer dread Zoom sessions — I used to have to go off camera and lie down in bed because of back pain,” she says. “I have the ability to change my position and stand when taking Zoom classes, and it’s been great to adjust my chair as needed.”

Julia “100%” recommends WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to others in need.

“It’s programs like these that make starting a business easier for those with disabilities,” she says. “I am so grateful this program exists!”
