The Long Road to Employment Pays off for Ken

November 23, 2010

Ken sustained a serious head injury more than 18 years ago. Finding meaningful work, or as he puts it “getting a life”, after his injury was a serious challenge for him. Ken had an interest in small engine repair and personal training, so he looked for career opportunities in these fields. He was unsuccessful in finding employment, and, in 2006, he abandoned his goals to focus on rehabilitation.

Ken worked closely with the Employ-Ability Program Coordinator and Employment Specialist to conduct information interviews, explore training options, and to investigate job possibilities with employers in the Fredericton and Oromocto regions. In 2008, on his 37th birthday, Ken began a full time Health, Wellness and Recreation program at Compu-College (new window). During this time, Ken began volunteering at the YMCA (new window) and was also invited to do a practicum with them.

Immediately following graduation from the program in October of 2009, Ken’s job search began in earnest with the help of the Neil Squire Society’s Employment Specialist, Bev Grasse. A sagging economy and the approaching holiday season did not bode well for Ken’s job search efforts. Gyms were not hiring and there was no work on the horizon. Bev decided to try “one more kick at the can” and went back to speak with her contact at the YMCA (new window). This time she found success. They offered Ken a part time position which would eventually lead to full time. Ken began his new job in January of 2010.
