Recently, we’ve welcomed aboard a number of new members to our team to help us out with outreach, events, and projects. Take a moment to meet the new faces at Makers Making Change (new window):
Kris (BC Outreach & Operations Coordinator — Burnaby, BC)
Kris (she/they) is a longtime events worker and lifelong crafter turned outreach coordinator at Makers Making Change. They have a background in media and athletics around the Pacific Northwest and Ontario where they learned the importance of building equity in community spaces. MMC allows Kris to do hands-on work and see the impact Makers Making Change has on peoples’ everyday lives. In her spare time, she loves fitness and photography.
Samantha (Outreach Coordinator — Scarborough, Ontario)
“I joined Makers Making Change as an Outreach Coordinator because I love helping people access supportive resources. I am super excited to be a part of a team that brings people together through innovation, inclusion, and the power of community. I have a degree in Communication and Media Studies from Carleton University. In my free time, I enjoy hosting events, engaging in community work, and supporting underserved communities.”
Jorene (Junior Developer — Burnaby, BC)
“I discovered the importance of accessibility as a code tutor for neurodivergent youths and that led to my passion for building software to improve everyday life. I’m excited to use and make technology more accessible for everyone. In my free time, I like to try new hobbies, run and play board games.”
Grace (Co-op STEM Event Leader — Fredericton, New Brunswick)
“I wanted to be a part of Makers Making Change because I was inspired by all the impactful work they do. I want to apply my engineering skills to create technology that helps others in their day-to-day lives, and Makers Making Change is a perfect example of this. I love that the group also focuses on adapting technology used for entertainment, such as gaming and toys. My favourite device is the interact switch because of all the different color and pattern variations for the button tops! Outside of work, I enjoy reading and spending time outdoors, including hiking, running and biking!”
Yasmeen (Co-op STEM Event Leader — Winnipeg, Manitoba)
Yasmeen is a mechanical engineering student at the U of M working at MMC as a Co-op STEM Event Leader on the engineering and outreach teams. She is passionate about biomedical engineering as it allows her to use her engineering knowledge to improve the lives of others. She was excited to join MMC because she appreciates how the organization makes assistive technology more affordable and accessible. Her favorite device is the Low Profile switch because it is a simple solution that can create a really big difference in someone’s life. In her free time, she loves cooking, baking, and spending time outside.
Emily (Co-op STEM Event Leader — St Albert, Alberta)
Emily is a mechanical biomedical engineering student entering her fourth year. With a passion for applying technology to create meaningful solutions, Emily was drawn to Makers Making Change when she learned about their work. Her favorite device is the Light Touch Switch because it is simple to make, affordable, and has many different uses. Outside of work and studies, Emily enjoys tinkering with her car, playing games, and reading.
Heather (Outreach Coordinator — Edmonton, Alberta)
We also welcome back Heather to our team.
“With a background in educational outreach, I’ve always been motivated by the desire to help individuals find their own paths to success. My passion for assistive technology began when I discovered Universal Design and its simple yet life-changing impact. I’m especially driven to boost the availability of assistive technology and expand awareness, working to break down barriers and empower people to succeed on their own terms. Outside of my professional work, I’m a dedicated maker, constantly exploring new ways to blend creativity with functionality.”
