Deo of Saskatoon (new window), Saskatchewan, was having difficulty finding employment after having an aneurysm (new window) and a stroke (new window) in 2008. English is not his first language, and he was finding this to be an additional barrier to employment.
His Social Worker referred him to the Neil Squire Society’s Employ-Ability program and he jumped at the chance to join the class.
“It was helpful for me because it gives me the opportunity to improve my English skills because all the time participants talk in English,” says Deo. “Really, I am different because now I feel that I am not alone in this world. There are some people who care. It seems like a good family where everybody cares about everyone. It is unbelievable.”
Deo hopes that he will be able to adapt to his new life and that he will also return to work one day.
