August 16, 2011

Randy, Archie, and Jimmie took part in the Neil Squire Society’s Employ-Ability program via distance learning from Pinehouse Saskatchewan (new window).

From left to right Jimmy, Employ-Ability Program Assistant Violet, Randy and ArchieRandy, who has a head injury (new window), says it takes him “a while to work” and his eye sight “is not 100 percent.” He really enjoyed his class mates and meeting other participants and staff in Regina (new window), Weyburn (new window), and Saskatoon (new window). “I liked to listen to the people who talked about their disability because it makes me know that I can do more things with my disability and achieve more in life.”

Randy learned how to write a resume and cover letter, and learned what questions he should ask when he goes for a job interview. “The Employ-Ability program has really helped me in looking for a job with my disability [in mind],” he says. “Since taking this course, I have learned more about how to look for other work besides janitorial work; I could do office work, for example. Now my self-confidence is way up and I can tell other people to take this course. I feel better about myself that I don’t have to stay home all the time.”

Archie has a back injury (new window) and “cannot lift or carry more than fifty pounds.” He learned a lot of new things in the Employ-Ability programlike making resumes and cover letters,” however the most beneficial exercise for Archie was learning how to make himself useful. “It has helped me a lot since I came to this class, I’m so proud of it,” he says. “I have been different since I came to this program. I’ve been so happy taking this program.” Archie has just begun his job search.

Jimmy has a learning disability (new window). He heard about the Employ-Ability program from his social worker and immediately signed up. “I enjoyed typing and I enjoyed the online work. I learned how to make resumes and cover letters and what to expect when I have an interview. I am going to send my resume and cover letter to all the jobs sites that I am interested in and I will continue taking courses to be better educate [myself] for the work force.”

Good luck, Randy, Archie and Jimmy!
