Shawn, from Sudbury, Ontario (new window), has been participating in Distance Computer Comfort since January. Since he lives more than 6 hours away from the closest Neil Squire Society office, in Ottawa, Shawn connects to his Computer Comfort tutor via distance learning.
Shawn, who has a mild case of cerebral palsy (new window), learned about the program from the Independent Living Centre in Sudbury (new window). Computer Comfort piqued his interest as a way to expand his computer skills before he begins attending Cambrian College (new window) in the fall to with the goal of becoming a social service worker. He is currently focusing on learning Microsoft Word to be able to complete his assignments more effectively. He is also learning Microsoft Excel, a program with which he previously had little experience.
Shawn appreciates the freedom that comes from distance learning. When asked about his favorite aspect of the program, Shawn says: “Being able to do it on my own schedule, from the comfort of my own home.” He also appreciates the patience that has been shown by his Vancouver based tutor Dave.
Computer Comfort has already been helpful in Shawn’s daily life. He is very active in his community, coaching two children’s baseball teams. He recently learned how to send group emails, which makes coordinating with his teams quick and easy.
Good luck in school, in baseball, and in life Shawn. We know your new computer skills will help in anything you choose to do.
