Determined to Succeed!

November 19, 2012

Commitment, patience, and attention to detail, this is exactly how Melissa applied herself to the Neil Squire Society’s Central Regional office’s Employ-Ability Program. Her hard work paid off! Melissa obtained a job as a supply daycare helper with La Coccinelle (new window) in Orleans. They provide daycare, kindergarten, and extra-circular programs in seven different locations in the region.

Melissa wtih Employ-Ability Facilitator, Polly BeachMelissa, who has muscular dystrophy, (new window) came to the Neil Squire Society (new window) with the goal of securing part-time employment. She was referred to the Neil Squire Society by Margo, a Vocational Rehabilitation Counsellor at the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre (new window).  Before obtaining her new job, Melissa methodically worked through the Career Development material on Moodle (new window). She also attended Monday afternoon workshops covering such topics as stress management, energy conservation, and disclosure of a disability to an employer.

As she completed her career research, two job goals became clear; dog groomer and daycare helper. Melissa pursued both of these job goals by conducting well researched information interviews. With her determination to succeed, Melissa knew she would have to step out of her comfort zone. Melissa picked up the phone, and made the nerve racking, and challenging, cold calls.

Her persistence paid off. Melissa happily reported that she began working on September 27, 2012 – just four months after entering the Employ-Ability Program!

Congratulations Melissa!
