A New Career for a New Stage in Life

July 26, 2011

Harmeet, who has low vision (new window) and navigates with a guide dog (new window), came to the Neil Squire Society upon moving back to Canada after a stint in the United States. As his family began to grow, he and his American wife both felt the desire to return to Canada.

Employ-Ability participant HarmeetIn the States, he had been working in sales and as a supervisor in a call centre. The labour market in British Columbia for call centres has been disappearing recently as many of these jobs are being sent offshore. Harmeet knew he needed to make a career change, but he didn’t know what he wanted to do.

Harmeet enrolled in the Society’s Employ-Ability program where he explored career options. The program gave him the opportunity to really take a look at who he was at this new stage of his life.

He was drawn to working in the field of employment services but he learned that without a university degree, opportunities for him would be limited. The other career that fascinated him was that of a Massage Therapist. This proved to be an excellent match for him. Harmeet started his training with the Utopia Massage Therapy School (new window) this past winter. He is looking forward to running his own business when he gets more experience as a Massage Therapist.

Best of luck, Harmeet!
