“How I work with people around me changed, personally, in a good way. On how I am more confident in working with other people. I am more open in speaking with others as I know I can hear them better. As compared to before, I’d rather stay quiet as I know I would always have a hard time hearing them and would feel embarrassed on asking them to keep repeating what they said.”
Tammy’s tenacity paid off when she interviewed at an employment support agency that helps people with developmental disabilities in Lethbridge, Alberta. Though Tammy did not have field experience, she impressed the hiring managers with her enthusiasm and perseverance.
“I have been provided with a tool so that I do not have to ask someone every single day so I can have my tea or water,” Marie says. “It may seem like a small thing, but it’s a huge gift. You won’t understand until you need it.”
“These accommodations have helped me be an active, informed, and safe co-worker. I can hear everything my clients, co-workers, and other service workers are telling me. I am no longer frustrating clients by not hearing them. I am no longer missing vital information.”
