Diane Discovers She’s Not Alone

February 21, 2012

Diane, who is 22 years old, has lived with very mild cerebral palsy and a wide range of intellectual and mental health disabilities her whole life. She heard about the Neil Squire Society (new window) via word of mouth at the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (new window) group home she lives in.

The Employ-Ability Program has helped me to identify that I am not alone in the challenges I face because of my disabilities,” says Diane of her experience in the Program. She found the wellness for work module on stress and stress reduction particularly useful. “I often take on too much at once. This module has taught me ways to make time for myself that don’t cost anything.

This program has helped me to be ok with letting prospective employers know that I have disabilities and that I may need adaptations and accommodations in the work place,” says Diane.

Since graduating from the Employ-Ability Program, Diana has joined the Board of Saskatchewan Voice of People with Disabilities (new window) as a Youth Representative. She has also taken on volunteer positions with Saskatchewan Association for Community Living (new window), People First (new window) and a self advocacy action group. Diane hopes to be able to find and hold down a part-time job and ultimately get off social assistance.

Good luck to you, Diane!
