William, who is blind and has cerebral palsy (new window) , joined the Employ-Ability Program in Burnaby, British Columbia, full of enthusiasm and energy. Early on, while the class was exploring career options, he expressed a keen interest in working as a radio host or DJ. After helping William research this field, we discovered that being a DJ involved more than just playing music.
Employ-Ability staff worked hard to find an opportunity for William. With the help of Polaris Employment (new window) , who has partnered with the Neil Squire Society job hunters in the past, we were connected with the Station Manager and Program Coordinator of CJSF Radio (new window) , the Co-op radio station at Simon Fraser University (new window). CJSF (new window) expressed an interest in making their radio station accessible for all and were excited to make this opportunity work for William.
After some correspondence and several meetings, William was invited to participate in a volunteer training session. He was then given the opportunity to host a show called Jambalaya.
William has successfully completed the training session with the help of a volunteer assistant. We anticipate that he will be hosting his first show in the next few weeks. William is very close to realizing his dream. The Neil Squire Society is proud of William and all the hard work that was put in by everyone involved. To see him in his element behind the microphone has been truly gratifying. We look forward to hearing William on the air waves very soon and wish him much success as he embarks on this new exciting career. Stay tuned!
