Job Overview

As a Special Education Assistant under the Summer Jobs Program, the student will work directly with people with disabilities in our classrooms and programming. They will assist in delivering programs focused on digital technology skills, including digital literacy, assistive technology, and adaptive access.

This position is funded for 280 hours and will be offered as full-time (37.5 hours per week), unless otherwise discussed with the successful candidate.

Duties

  • Assist participants in learning how to use computers and mobile devices
  • Teach and support clients in using assistive technology (AT) software such as screen readers, screen magnifiers, dictation tools, and other access technologies, for educational, personal, or job-related purposes
  • Research and experiment with new or emerging technology
  • Prepare and deliver presentations (virtual and/or in-person)
  • Create accessible content and resources for clients
  • Develop lesson plans and training manuals for volunteers
  • Report regularly to the Distance Training Coordinator, including submitting a monthly activity report
  • Demonstrate initiative, creativity, and problem-solving in assigned tasks
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skills

Technical Skills:

  • Familiarity with Windows and Mac operating systems, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and internet technologies
  • Experience using mobile devices (iOS and Android), with exposure to accessibility features such as dictation
  • Willingness to learn and support online learning platforms and assistive technology software

Experience with assistive technology software such as JAWS, ZoomText, NVDA, or Dragon is an asset, especially in a teaching, training, or support role

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and a respectful, inclusive approach when working with adults with disabilities

Personal Attributes:

  • Self-motivated, creative, and able to demonstrate initiative
  • Comfortable working independently and solving problems with minimal supervision
  • Flexible with scheduling (as participants may be in different time zones)

Assets (Preferred but Not Required):

  • Experience with facilitation, teaching, or tutoring
  • Familiarity with assistive technology tools or environments is considered an advantage

Eligibility Requirements (per Summer Jobs Program)

To be eligible, applicants must:

  1. Be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment
  2. Be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  3. Be legally entitled to work in Canada according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation

Note: International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.
