Hal didn’t waste any time landing a new job after participating in the programs available through the Neil Squire Society (new window). Hal has an injury in his shoulders, which prevents him from heavy lifting or using his arms above has head. Ultimately this left Hal unable to work at any labour intensive jobs. Hal sought out the Neil Squire Society with the intentions of finding the right help to allow him to develop the skills needed to land a new job.
Hal, who lives in Oliver (new window), British Columbia (new window), knew that he needed to advance his computer skills so he started participating in the Neil Squire Society’s Distance Computer Comfort Program. Thanks to Hal’s hard work, commitment, and help from Distance Computer Comfort tutor, Carolee, Hal became a computer pro in no time.
It was a whirl-wind of an experience for Hal. Hal joined the Distance Computer Program before Christmas and by January he was learning the next step for career development in the Employ-Ability Program. Connecting from home to the Footprints for Technology centre (new window) in Penticton (new window), Hal developed life-long career skills, but also discovered a key ingredient for the job search, confidence.
Hal was dedicated to getting what he wanted, and after learning about the resources available he took advantage of every single one! A week after graduating from the Employ-Ability Program, Hal landed a job in a warehouse (new window). He credits the marketing and networking skills he learned allowing him to find the right connections to the job. Within a couple of months he will be trained as a forklift (new window) operator which will be even better for his shoulder disability. “Six degrees of separation” got me the job, says Hal.
