Kristy Empowers Others Through Literacy

May 10, 2011

Kristy is a bubbly young woman who exudes energy and ability. She is a qualified English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor (new window) and has also obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree (new window), a Provincial Instructor Diploma (new window), a Train the Trainer Certificate, and a literacy and bilingualism certificate. Kristy has had experience teaching one-on-one, in group settings and also in corporate environments.

Kristy has a visual impairment (new window) and minor paralysis (new window) on one side of her body. Although she finds this to be a challenge at times, it certainly does not define the woman she is.

Neil Squire Society client KristyWhen Kristy contacted Neil Squire Society Job Developer and Career Facilitator, Anu Pala, Kristy expressed that she needed support with her job search. Based on past personal concerns, she was experiencing low self-confidence.

Kristy’s openness to learn, diligence in attending regular meetings, and willingness to work, resulted in her obtaining a contract with Katimavik (new window), Canada’s youth volunteer-service program, as an ESL teacher. Although this was a short term position, it gave her immense confidence and the drive to stay motivated and continue with her job search.

As Kristy’s confidence and motivation increased, she secured several private tutoring contracts through an online tutoring service, as well as through her own business contacts. Kristy is currently seeking volunteer work so that she can continue to pursue her passion—empowering others through literacy.

Way to go, Kristy!
