Logan finds his first job in four years

October 17, 2012

Logan is a bright young man who after participating in the Neil Squire Society’s Employ-Ability Program, has found his first job in four years. Logan wrote the Neil Squire Society (new window) a letter and asked us to share it.

“My name is Logan Van Dyk and I am a Neil Squire Society successLogan, Employ-Ability Participant
story. When I was 17 my life was drastically changed due to a serious mountain biking injury that left me with a spinal cord injury (new window) at the c5/c6 vertebrae. It took extensive rehab before I was strong enough to head back to my house in Fort Langley. After 3 and a half years of having no idea what to do and getting tired of playing video games, my mom informed me of The Neil Squire Society and how they help people with physical disabilities. After an appointment with Chris Wright, and hearing all that the society had to offer, I knew what I had to do.

Waking up at 6:00am every morning to get from my house to Burnaby was hard to get use to, but with each week it became easier and easier. Through the programs offered like personality dimensions, and career cruising, my path became clear as I gained confidence and learned more about myself. With encouragement from the facilitators and the bond that grew between my class mates and I, there was constant support inspiring me to achieve greatness.

I have now been accepted to work in a Youth Intern position with Vancouver Community Network. (new window) To have my first job in over four years is very exciting. As my life moves towards my goal of entering broadcast and media I know I can overcome any obstacle. This is not just a success story for me, but for all of the amazing people who have helped me through my journey. This only proves that everyone can find a direction in life no matter how down they are. All one needs is some guidance and that first stepping stone that nudges you out the door.”

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings.
