Matt had been out of the workforce for some time while dealing with the effects of an industrial accident that had left him with head trauma (new window), memory issues and complications as a result of numerous broken bones. He also had developed a significant heart problem as the result of Marfan syndrome (new window), which affects the connective tissues.
While in the Employ-Ability program Matt learned how to write a resume and how to participate in a successful interview. He also researched educational opportunities to help move forward with his employment goal.
When he found the Light Warehouse Training program (new window) at Douglas College (new window) he called the instructor for an information interview. Matt had worked in warehouses previously but all of his certifications had expired.
Matt applied to the Light Warehouse Training program, was accepted, and began the program. He will soon be certified in occupational health and safety, forklift operation, occupational first aid and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (new window) (WHIMIS).There is a short work experience included at the end of the course. Students have the opportunity to work in a distribution centre, a warehouse, or another related setting, in order to put into practice the skills and knowledge they have acquired. With this course under his belt, Matt will be one step closer to his goal.
Good luck, Matt!
