Donna joined the Neil Squire Society’s Employ-Ability program from Independent Living Vernon (new window). She was a stay-at-home mom for many years and she was feeling left behind and intimidated by the prospects of re-joining the workforce. Donna was also working to overcome pain issues in her arms, feet, and back from arthritis (new window) and carpal tunnel syndrome (new window). “It’s exhausting and painful when a lot of physical work needs to be done.”
During the assessments and career research portion of the Employ-Ability program, a career as a Certified Education Assistant stood out. “This was perfect for me, it was something I loved and it allowed me to work when my kids were in school, and not work when they’re not in school,” said Donna.
In collaboration with a local organization, Donna worked closely with Employ-Ability staff and applied to the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities (new window) for the cost of her education. After a lot of hard work, Donna was excited to learn the good news, “My application for the Opportunity Fund was accepted!!! They are paying for the tuition, books, and transportation. I am very, very happy and grateful for this opportunity that I have been given. It has been quite the ride.”
“I wanted to thank each and every one of you for what you contributed to my success,” said Donna. “I really struggled with learning new skills and I almost quit a couple of times, but I pushed through.”
We are very grateful to have assisted Donna in setting and achieving goals for re-entering the workforce. Her Certified Education Assistant courses started on January 8th, in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. We’re thrilled that she’s taken this next step on the journey she started with the Employ-Ability program at Independent Living Vernon (new window).
