Katherine began a battle with depression (new window) after learning that she had Parkinson’s disease (new window). She was referred to the Neil Squire Society’s (new window) Employ-Ability program in Burnaby (new window), British Columbia (new window), with some trepidation at first. “I wasn’t sure about this program, but after an interview with [Program Manager] Chris, who was so warm and welcoming, she made me feel at ease,” said Katherine.
Katherine’s computer was set up with a keyboard guard which enabled her to use the keyboard more easily. She then learned how to write “a proper resume and cover letter. With the help of the wonderful staff, I learned proper interviewing skills. My wonderful Employ-Ability team, Laureen, Lissa, and Chris were very helpful with my job search.”
Katherine sent out over 100 resumes over four months and went on several interviews. During that time “the support of the Employ-Ability team and what I learned during the program kept me going,” said Katherine.
After all of her hard work, Katherine landed a job at Centerplate (new window), a food services supplier at the Vancouver Convention Centre (new window). “I asked the Neil Squire team to come to a meeting with me. I gave Chris, Laureen and Lissa my news and they were all so happy for me. It was hugs all around.”
Congratulations, Katherine!
