“I couldn’t really afford a computer,” Husein says. “I was using my phone all the time, but that’s not very practical.”
One of the first things you’ll notice when you enter Amira’s home is the warm welcome and hospitality. She takes great pride in preparing coffee and foods for guests — often a delicious Syrian treat — and welcomes you into her family. While taking part in our Digital Jumpstart program, this is how she always welcomes her trainer, Erin, into her home.
In this episode we are joined by our summer student, Jonathon Beaumont. Jonathon is a relatively new AT user who has been diagnosed with a rare neurological condition known as Friedreich’s ataxia. We talk about what it’s like to be diagnosed with a neurological condition at age 13, which AT he uses and why, his experiences in university as an AT user, and much more.
“I have been provided with a tool so that I do not have to ask someone every single day so I can have my tea or water,” Marie says. “It may seem like a small thing, but it’s a huge gift. You won’t understand until you need it.”
