Marcus Gains Job-Searching Skills and a New Position

February 28, 2018

Marcus, who has depression and anxiety, came to the Neil Squire Society upon the recommendation of a friend’s parent. He had a clear career goal in mind: to work in a customer service position. However, he needed assistance in figuring out how to job-search.

Marcus, Working Together participantMarcus joined the Working Together program at the Neil Squire Society’s Prairie Regional Office. The program helps people with disabilities develop the skills they need to achieve their employment goals.

Marcus was paired with a job developer. Together, they worked on his resume, cover letter, and tools for managing his disabilities while at work.

Rehearsing a mock interview with his job developer helped calm some of Marcus’s nervousness prior to his first real interview with the Habitat for Humanity ReStore (opens in a new window). The ReStore is a non-profit in Regina that sells building supplies, home furnishings, appliances, and décor to fund Habitat for Humanity (opens in a new window)’s homebuilding projects.

Marcus’s practice and hard work worked in his favour: he was hired as a sorter for the ReStore. A few months in, he is being trained for managing the sorting area.

Marcus expressed his gratefulness for the Neil Squire Society’s help in finding a job he is passionate about. “It has helped me develop skills that I can take into the workplace to manage my disability,” he says.
