From Trucker to Health and Safety Officer

May 23, 2012

Coming from a family of six boys with very limited resources, Tyrone left school at the age of 18 and went to work as a labourer. At 21, he began a career in trucking, which would become his life for the next 18 years. All those years of wear and tear on his right shoulder, eventually made it impossible for him fulfill the rigorous demands of life as a trucker (new window).

In 2010, Tyrone finally came to the realization that he could no longer continue to drive a truck for a living and decided to set his sights on some new goals. WorkSafe NB (new window) supported him in pursuing his high school equivalency, and within three months he obtained his GED (new window) with honors. Tyrone was not finished there, however. He jumped right into the Health and Safety Program (new window) at the University of Fredericton (new window), which he finished in record time. A program that normally takes 12 months to complete, took Tyrone just three months to finish.

During the first meeting with Neil Squire Society (new window) Employment Specialist, Bev Grasse, at the Atlantic Regional Office in Fredericton (new window), New Brunswick (new window), Tyrone expressed interest in working out West on a rotational basis. Bev explained that a friend of hers had just gone to Alberta in the fall to work for a company called Krupp Canada. After doing some research, Tyrone said he would be interested in pursuing a position with this company. Bev forwarded his resume along to Krupp Canada, and things moved quickly from there. Within a week, Tyrone had his first telephone interview. A second telephone interview was completed a couple of weeks later, and then a job offer was made.

Tyrone flew to Alberta (new window) on April 12 to start his job as a Health and Safety Officer. Tyrone feels that he could not have picked a better job for him and his family.

Congratulations, Tyrone!
