Viola has experienced back pain since the birth of her daughter in 2003, which causes her intermittent discomfort in her daily life. In 2020, she was diagnosed with depression and hypertension.

When she joined our Creative Employment Options program, her initial focus was on career exploration. Having immigrated to Canada from Kenya, her previous educational experience did not transfer over into Canadian certification. Her Job Developer encouraged her to read every job posting available — this helped her understand not only what jobs were currently hiring, but what careers matched her skills. Being a very social and compassionate person, she knew she wanted to work with people and enrich their lives.

Viola crafted resumes and cover letters that targeted careers in retail, hospitality, and working with both children and the elderly. She diligently practised mock interviews and learned how to use the STAR method when responding — with each mock interview, she felt her confidence grow.

She learned about the importance of developing a wellness routine, and has continued to practice meditation and physical exercise so she can maintain her stamina when she is at work.

Viola also learned about the importance of networking. As she began discussing her job search with her personal network, a friend who was living in northern Saskatchewan recommended she look for opportunities up north, as northern communities are always looking for good people to fill vacant positions.

On a visit to a friend in the Flin Flon-Creighton area, she was offered to interview for a position at a local store. Viola jumped at the opportunity to put what she learned from Neil Squire into practice.  She was offered the role and within two weeks she moved up north to start her new life.

“I am glad I made this great move, and I love the little town where everyone is so friendly — I already made friends at the drop-in with seniors playing bingo and card games,” she says, sharing that she’s since picked up a second part-time job.
