Paula is a homeshare provider, providing support for two adults with disabilities who live with her. Her duties include providing a safe and comfortable home environment, preparing meals, and taking the people she supports to medical appointments.

A kitchen.“I have a hearing impairment that was getting in the way of hearing the people I care for in my home, and also in interactions with medical professionals, day program staff, family, and other individuals and groups involved in their lives,” she explains.

She learned about WorkBC Assistive Technology Services through her audiologist at the Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre. She applied, and was able to receive funding for her much-needed hearing aids.

“The hearing aids have helped enormously. I am no longer asking everyone to repeat themselves and I feel much more confident in my interactions with the professional community involved in their care,” she says.

“I feel that [my employment] is more sustainable now. I can now imagine continuing on longer as a homeshare provider/caregiver than I had been thinking recently.”

Paula says she recommends WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to others in need.

“The staff were extremely friendly, respectful and helpful and made the process of applying for assistance very clear and straightforward,” she shares.

“I am very grateful for the financial assistance for my hearing aids. It has made all the difference in my work, [. . .] and I feel much more confident. Thank you!”
