July 22, 2025

With a number of certificates under his belt, Sheldon had a good job as a steelmaker and inspector for a steel and pipe manufacturer. Last July, however, he fell in an accident causing a C7 spinal cord injury, and he now needs to use a wheelchair for mobility.

Creative Employment Options participant Sheldon at work.Sheldon joined our Creative Employment Options program looking to find a new job. “I heard about Neil Squire in the community I live in and had to act on it,” he shares. “I called, [. . .] I was thrilled with the energy I was feeling about it. It mattered most that I could improve myself in lots of areas of my life, especially getting a job.”

Our Creative Employment Options team helped him polish his resume and he received guidance on how he could disclose his disability to future employers. He also received training from our Computer Comfort program, learning how to use PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and email.

With newfound confidence and a carefully crafted resume, Sheldon was ready to re-enter the workforce.

I made it through the course,” he says. “It means very much to me completing the program because there has been loose ends in my life I couldn’t finish.”

Sheldon’s perseverance paid off when he landed a position working with a local community association in Regina where he is doing rewarding work, helping people in need.

Neil Squire gave me options in the workforce — jobs I could capitalize on having a disability,” he shares.

Sheldon’s employment journey shows that dedication and perseverance can lead to great things. He knew exactly what direction he wanted to take his future career and put in the necessary steps to achieve this. Now, he enjoys his work while also doing rehab for his injury with the hope of walking again.
