Having a tough time finding employment after a diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Amelia came to Neil Squire for help.
Amelia was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2007, and she says its impacts vary from moderate to severe depending on the day. She is unable to be on her feet for long periods of time and experiences muscle pain throughout their body due to nerve damage. This eventually led to her developing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and she realized she needed help figuring out her employment options.
In particular, she was interested in developing a more professional resume and cover letter, and needed help with disclosing her disability to potential employers. Amelia joined our Creative Employment Options program and Group Employment Skills program, which is only available in Saskatchewan.
Working closely with her Job Developer, they were able to provide the motivational and technical support that she required to move forward in an independent, positive way to apply for jobs with confidence. Her Job Developer also helped her format a new resume and cover letter, walking her through why they made the different changes.
Amelia found that the group setting of the Group Employment Skills program immensely helped her gain knowledge, motivation, and self-esteem by learning that she was not alone in her struggle to find employment and could share some of her fears openly with others in the same situation as herself.
She also received one-on-one tutoring through the Computer Comfort program, which gave her the computer skills to apply for jobs on her own with confidence. Before long, Amelia started to get callbacks for interviews.
With the help of her newfound employability skills and the support of our Creative Employment Options team, Amelia landed a job at a dollar store. Her new role has changed her perspective. She no longer lets her disability stand in the way of being the best person she can be. She enjoys her work and strives to do her best every day.
